Australia: Thredbo Alpine Coaster
Construction is underway for Thredbo’s Alpine Coaster which was granted Development Approval earlier this year. The coaster will diversify Thredbo’s recreational offerings through the provision of a year-round all-weather rail-guided toboggan ride.
The coaster is approximately 1.5 km in length with a mix of uphill and downhill tracks, a tunnel, bridges and circles that traverse through the alpine environment. Passengers are able to control their speed of up to 40 km/hr. Thredbo Alpine Coaster is planned to be in operation for Winter 2024.
Snowmaking Enhancements
Thredbo’s snowmaking fleet remains world-class following continual enhancements each year. This winter, Thredbo has added a new pipeline gun on the Sundowner trail as well as four new fan guns on the famous Supertrail.
Last winter, Thredbo added already six new fixed snowmaking guns and four mobile snowmaking guns to its fleet. The mobile snowmaking guns significantly enhanced Thredbo’s ability to make snow across Friday Flat as well as across the entire resort last winter and this year’s enhancements will improve this even further.
Australia’s Newest Ski Lift – Freddie’s Snowrunner
This winter, as part of the Chairlift Development Plan, Thredbo welcomed Australia’s newest ski lift; Freddie’s Snowsports Snowrunner. Taking the resort’s total number of lifts to 15, it is one of the country’s longest snow runners at 98 metres long.
Adding to Thredbo’s premium snowsport lesson experience with small class sizes and highly qualified instructors, Freddie’s Snowrunner is dedicated to the new Kids Learning Area and will be a game changer for children’s lessons.
A new office space will also house on-hand supervisor staff and provide more convenient toileting facilities for children in their lessons.
10-Year Chairlift Development Plan
Thredbo is currently in the midst of a 10-year chairlift replacement plan, designed to update and enhance Thredbo’s lifting infrastructure.
In addition to the new Freddie’s Snowrunner this year, last winter Thredbo launched a new Easy Rider T-Bar in the Cruiser Terrain Park Area that increased load capacity by over 35%.
Looking ahead, Thredbo will continue to roll out its Chairlift Development Plan over the coming years, with plans to replace Snowgums Chairlift next up on the agenda
Upcoming Developments
A number of other major development applications have been submitted to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.
These will see substantial investment over the coming years to develop and enhance some of the most popular areas of the resort, including the development of a new Merritts Mountain House and the development of additional mountain biking trails, adding to Thredbo’s extensive network of graded MTB trails.
