In a special meeting, the politicians in Herne almost unanimously voted in favour of pushing ahead with the plans for a cable car in Wanne-Eickel. In the course of this meeting, the current plans and a feasibility study were presented. Now the city wants to apply for funding for the cable car at the state and federal ministries of transport.

It depends on this application whether the cableway will actually be realised in Herne. If the application is approved, construction could start between 2025 and 2030. The feasibility study proves that the project is basically eligible for funding.

Connection to the main railway station

During the presentation of the feasibility study, the first key data on the cableway also became public. The city plans to connect the Blumenthal mine with the Wanne-Eickel main railway station. The cable car is to cover a distance of 1,050 metres in about three and a half minutes.

500 people can be transported in each direction. A reversible aerial tramway is planned with two cabins, each of which can carry 40 people. The construction costs for this project are 31.83 million euros, as reported by the engineering firm that presented the feasibility study.
