Delhi: Cable car over the Yamuna River
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) aims to improve mobility in the capital region of India while also addressing the city’s air pollution and traffic problems. One component of this is an urban cable car over the Yamuna River.
As reported by the portal NativePlanet, the system will connect key residential and commercial areas near subway stations on both sides of the river. According to Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena, these locations will be carefully selected to avoid damage to flood-prone areas.
The cable car is expected to carry about 50 passengers per cabin. It would therefore likely be an aerial tramway (editor’s note). The route is planned to run directly and scenically over the river without contributing to urban sprawl.
Operations are planned from morning to evening to be attractive to commuters. According to the media outlet Urban Acres, commuters have so far relied on buses, autorickshaws, or private vehicles, all of which significantly contribute to Delhi’s notorious air pollution.
Politics applies pressure
The Delhi Development Authority expects the cable car to reduce traffic on the roads and lower emissions in the air. The stations will be located near subway and bus stations to make transfers as quick and easy as possible.
Parking areas located some distance away are intended to encourage people to walk short distances through parks and green spaces to stay healthy. According to Urban Transport News, the DDA has already developed corresponding green spaces with Baansera and Asita.
Lieutenant-Governor Saxena has instructed the DDA to submit a preliminary report on the cable car project within a month. This expedited approach reflects the urgency of addressing Delhi’s transport and environmental problems.
