Sydney: Zoo plans new cable car
After 35 years, the beloved Sky Safari cable car at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, made its final ride in 2023. It was a temporary farewell, but plans for a new urban cable car are in full swing, currently for example responses to submissions.
Thanks to an investment announced by the New South Wales government in April 2022, the Sky Safari is set to be transformed into an unforgettable and accessible family experience.
Since its opening in 1987, the Sky Safari has been a popular part of the Taronga Zoo experience, but it now requires modernization to meet accessibility standards and the increased demand.
The redesigned cable car, according to the operator, will revolutionize the guest experience, with larger and more accessible gondolas. The main focus of the project is a commitment to making the zoo more accessible for everyone. Until now, the cable car could not accommodate wheelchairs due to its cabin design.
Sky Safari in the best sense:
The cable car is designed to allow guests to see a variety of wildlife, many of which are endangered.

The Route
The Taronga Zoo covers 28 hectares, with the distance from the Taronga Zoo Wharf to the main entrance being 67 meters, or 22 stories high. This is equivalent to the height of the Sydney Opera House.
Given the breathtaking and iconic location of the zoo, there are some challenges regarding accessibility. For this reason, a cable car is once again being chosen as the solution.
The existing cable car route will be maintained. The system will transport visitors in both directions from the newly renovated Taronga Zoo ferry terminal to the main entrance of the zoo.
The Details
As previously mentioned, additional and larger gondolas will significantly improve the guest experience for all visitors. The plan includes cabins for six to ten people, with space for strollers and wheelchairs.
The new cable car’s capacity will be higher than the old Sky Safari, ensuring a smoother experience for guests around Taronga. With the cable car, visitors will have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, many of which are endangered.
Finally, the cable car aims to encourage guests to use public transport while exploring Sydney Harbour on their way to Taronga.
Subject to building approval, construction of the new Sky Safari is set to begin at the end of 2025, with the planned opening in 2027-2028. The investment volume is reported to be 77 million dollars, according to The Urban Developer.
