Cologne: The “Rheinpendel” as a future-orientated mobility solution
Municipal transport systems are reaching their limits in many places. Traffic jams and overcrowded buses or even inadequate access to peripheral and newly developed areas cause frustration. The urban cable car can provide a remedy here. They are characterised by a fast construction time and minimal land sealing and transport passengers comfortably through traffic jams – as the cable car in Cologne proves.
Rheinpendel: Is a cable car feasible in Cologne?
The River Rhine continues to be both a lifeline and an urban barrier for the German metropolis. To connect the two halves of the city on the respective riverbanks, it requires efficient connections - perhaps a cable car?
Cable car network vision: Rheinpendel – the dream for Cologne
In addition to the current plans for the Skytrain cable car in Cologne, the thinking in the major German city is on a much larger scale. Voter group “GUT Köln” is proposing a cable car network that winds its way through the entire city. This ambitious vision is called “Rheinpendel” (Rhine commute).
Cable car in package
The journey from the idea to a completed cable car is long and includes many stations. That is why cable car experts from Germany, Austria and South Tyrol have decide to build the ROPEWAY PROJECT GROUP. Due to the involfment of a broad expertise area, urban cable car projects can be handled in part or from one source. This is proved by projects in Duisburg, Cottbus, Klausen and Nainital.
Is Cologne getting more cable cars?
The city of Cologne has published a new feasibility study, which has examined the technical feasibility of the Rheinpendel idea, multiple cable cars crossing the Rhine for public transportation. The findings will now be incorporated into the upcoming creation of a "Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan" (SUMP).
