Big Sky: What a masterplan can look like
Lone mountain is an impressive 11,167-foot (3.404 m) mountain and the centre of the Big Sky ski resort in the northwestern state of Montana. Close to the Yellowstone National Park, this ski resort lives up to its name.
With 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, 24 chair lifts, 12 surface lifts and incredible views, Big Sky has been applauded for its short waiting times, thanks to its incredibly advanced lift systems, which it now plans to expand.
The vision
Taking the Alps as a role model, the ski resort wants the most technologically advanced lifts to access terrain, enhance dining and build new facilities.
“We couldn’t think of a more significant and emblematic series of initiatives to conclude the transformation we’re accomplishing. Coupling a truly world-class tram experience with the most architecturally considered on- mountain food and drinks as well as Mountain Sports facilities will set a new standard for mountain communities in North America,” said Stephen Kircher, CEO and president, Boyne Resorts.

The project – Big Sky 2025
The project started way back in 2016, with two lift replacements and many more expansions, remodellings and developments in the following years. 2022 marks the final phase of the ten- year vision plan. In addition to the tram line, mountain village enhancements and workforce housing additions are being built to keep up with the growing demand for workers. But that‘s not all: with the new tram up to Lone Peak, a new era of projects is already on the horizon.

The new tram
The Big Sky 2025 project is at its final stop with a new tram experience.
The recent Lone Peak tram was in service for 25 years and will now be replaced by a quicker one up to an all-glass scenic viewing platform. This allows great views, overlooking Gallatin county as well as parts of Yellowstone National Park.
A glass floor platform will also be available to see below – and construction is due to start in summer 2022.
Leading up to the new tram line, a two-stage gondola will replace its predecessor, which has been in operation since 1973. This will connect the lower terminal of the new tram with the mid station learning centre and multiple dining facilities. This will be a major improvement, ensuring access to the summit in summer and winter.
“With the creation of this must-do experience accessible to all, we will offer the premier high-Alpine experience at Montana’s highest scenic viewpoint,“ says Big Sky Resort President and COO Taylor Middleton.

New facilities to enjoy
Of note are not only the ascent but also the facilities nearby. New and improved dining experiences, activity hubs, and a mountain sports learning centre will all be available to hire, along with a magic carpet. The mid station is perfect for beginners and first time skiers.
“This innovative project will kick off an exciting new chapter, transforming the future of tourism in Big Sky and across southwest Montana, and setting the stage for planning Big Sky’s next steps.” Kircher says. With this project the Big Sky Resort is focusing on upper-class Americans and targeting customers who are willing to pay for a luxury vacation.
