The repellent ski boot

The skiing and cable car industry is considered highly innovative for good reason. In addition to established players, visionaries regularly attract attention. Today, we introduce a new magnet technology for ski tourers.

Really repellent – that‘s how one might describe the innovation of Salzburg (Austria) native Martin Edelsbrunner. The passionate ski tourer with competitive experience has developed an upgrade for touring skis after studying sports equipment:

Under the brand Mevo, his start-up Edelworks markets a climbing aid consisting of a magnet in the ski boot and a magnet in the heel piece of the ski binding. These magnets repel each other, and the spring effect makes the ascent easier for the user.

“With Mevo, ski tourers can ascend more efficiently, comfortably, and quietly, and handle kick turns better,“ says Edelsbrunner. This improved ergonomics and active support save energy. Due to the damping effect of the repelling magnets, almost no walking noise is heard.

Additionally, the active lifting of the boot prevents rubbing, reducing the likelihood of blisters. “Field tests showed a subjective support of up to ten percent,“ reports Edelsbrunner.

Studies at FH Technikum Wien and the University of Salzburg are working to physiologically prove the effectiveness of Mevo. It has already been confirmed that the magnets do not affect avalanche warning systems.

From private use to ski industry standard?

Edelsbrunner has already applied for a patent for his invention. The neodymium magnets used are not only the strongest on the market but also maintain their performance throughout their lifespan without losing strength.

So far, he has been retrofitting the touring ski equipment of private individuals and continuously adapting Mevo to common binding models. Ski boots compatible with pin bindings are thus automatically suitable for the climbing aid.

“My big goal is for my system to become the licensed standard of a ski brand!“

The potential of Mevo has already been recognized in the industry:

Edelsbrunner‘s climbing aid won the “Victor 2022“ innovation award from Sport Business Magazine and was ranked among the top five at the ISPO Brand New Award. Consequently, there has been significant interest from manufacturers, retailers, and end customers.

“I am in good discussions with ski brands; there is nothing comparable on the market,“ emphasizes Edelsbrunner. For the further rollout of his product, he also sees an important partner in the cable car industry:

“I am happy to make Mevo available for ski tourers in a destination to test. Cable cars can offer this target group a little highlight.“
