Bus or (cable) railway? How do you find the right system?

Forecasts from all over the world herald the so-called urbanization wave. According to these forecasts, around six billion people (around two-thirds of the world‘s population) will be living in cities by 2050. This rapid growth means a Herculean task for the infrastructure development of cities.

The biggest challenge in planning a new mobility concept is found right at the beginning of the project. The historically grown spaces do not allow for every concept.

Lack of space, built-up areas with high conflicts of use or lack of land availability ensure that every possibility must be considered and advantages and disadvantages carefully weighed against each other.

A city-wide or regional needs analysis identifies gaps in the network and clarifies where there is an urgent need to expand the network. Based on these findings, the decision for the best transport system is made.

Due to their unique advantages, cable cars are now increasingly being considered as a solution for closing gaps. “Because cable cars operate at the +1 level, they are ideally suited for overcoming obstacles. Ropeways are also very well suited for the more cost-effective extension of existing public transport routes in urban areas,” says Gerald Pichlmair, initiator of the Cable Car World trade event.

As soon as it is clear where public transport needs reinforcement, the feasibility study phase can begin. In the case of the cable car, this would mean looking for the ideal route and places for shoring such as supports and stations.

“With mobility concepts, it is always important not to simply implement a prestige project, but to create a meaningful addition to the already existing public transport network. In doing so, you might also have to look beyond the familiar horizon,” says Dominik Berndt, initiator of Cable Car World.

CONGRESS WITH TRADE FAIR

Anyone who wants to learn more about comparing cable car systems can do so at Cable Car World. At the “yellow theme island”, the ropeway manufacturers BARTHOLET, DOPPELMAYR and LEITNER will jointly explain the importance of traffic development planning and the use of urban ropeways.

The congress with integrated trade fair will take place on 21 and 22 June 2022 at Messe Essen
