Contract for Uruapan goes to Doppelmayr

As SI Urban already reported, the state of Michoacán is planning an urban cable car modelled on Mexico City. Now the concrete details for the cable car line have been finalised.

The cable car in Uruapan, Michoacán, is expected to transport 1,500 people per hour, benefiting approximately 350,000 residents in the area. The planned route covers 8.4 kilometers and includes six stations. It will feature 94 10-passenger cabins from the Austrian cable car manufacturer DOPPELMAYR.

Investment in Transportation Infrastructure

Studies have shown that the city’s communities require a new mobility alternative, and the transportation system in Uruapan needs restructuring. The Uruapan cable car project is led by Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla.

The government of Michoacán has announced an investment of 3.2 billion pesos (rnd 160 million euros) in the city’s transportation system. Apart from enhancing public transportation, the project aims to boost the tourist appeal of the state.

The Minister of Urban Development and Mobility, Gladyz Butanda Macíase, stated that the cable car will be an innovative mode of transportation that will bring about a reconfiguration of routes, alleviate road congestion caused by vehicles, and complement both public and private land transportation.
