Plans for urban cable car in Herne
Koblenz has one of the few urban cable cars in Germany. The chances of construction in Herne are increasing.
The construction of a cable car from the General Blumenthal colliery wasteland to downtown Wanne was considered a pipe dream in Herne. Now, however, the preliminary work has already begun and is well advanced.
The advanced plans for the city were already evident at the New Year’s reception. There, the Mayor of Herne, Franz Dudda, welcomed experts from the ropeway industry, among others.
According to the Mayor, the plans in Herne are the most advanced in a comparison of the Ruhr region and contain the most substance.
The great advantage is that the route from Wanne-Mitte to Blumenthal is a relatively simple development. This is also particularly important for an innovative means of transport.

“Herne can become a pioneer for Germany.”
The cable car expert Dominik Berndt, who was also a guest at the reception, once again emphasized the advantages that a ropeway connection would have for the city of Herne. Above all for the ÖPNV (public personnel local traffic) new possibilities can be opened.
There would be no disruptive factors from other traffic, cable cars would be part of electromobility, would require little sealing for construction, and would thus not contribute to the heating of cities. They are safe and barrier-free. In addition, cable cars always have a tourist aspect and positive effects on urban development. Herne could attract particular attention as a reference case.
Since the Federal Ministry of Transport has now also discovered the cable car as part of the public transport offer, the chances of realization and implementation of the plans for the city of Herne are clearly increasing here.
