Cable car replaces destroyed bridge

Since February 17, 2025, a temporary cable car has been connecting the villages of Champsec and Sarreyer (Switzerland). It replaces the road bridge that was washed away in a storm and reduces travel time for locals from 26 minutes to just five. The system demonstrates how quickly cable cars can be implemented.

A temporary cable car has been operating since February 17, 2025, between the villages of Champsec and Sarreyer in Switzerland. It serves as a supplement to the transportation network until the road bridge, destroyed by the Fregnoley stream, is rebuilt—and demonstrates how quickly urban cable cars can be implemented.

In July 2024, severe storms hit the region. Heavy rainfall led to flooding, landslides, and debris flows that caused significant damage in the valley. The bridge on the cantonal road between Lourtier and Sarreyer was washed away, cutting off Sarreyer from the outside world.

Since then, the village could only be accessed via a forestry road, the Route du Soleil. According to Google Maps, the drive between the villages of Champsec and Sarreyer takes about 26 minutes. The new cable car has significantly reduced the travel time.

A 20-minute time saving:

The cable car ride takes 5 minutes, while the trip via the forestry road took 26 minutes.

Cable car as a quick solution

The 500-meter route is covered by a cabin with eight seats in just five minutes. It operates on a fixed schedule and ensures connections to the bus line Le Châble – Lourtier. In Champsec, parking spaces are also available for the residents of Sarreyer.

The construction of the cable car took five months. By comparison, the rebuilding of the road is expected to take about 18 to 24 months. The start of construction is planned for spring 2026. After the Fregnoley bridge is reopened, the cable car will be removed.
