The marketplace for urban cable cars

Cable cars are on the rise. More and more cities are incorporating the cable-drawn transport system into their transport planning. Yet, because the cable car is new to the urban sphere, there is still a lack of key interconnections. Specialist trade fair with integrated congress CABLE CAR WORLD hopes to tackle precisely this issue and to bring together a broad range of stakeholders and decision-makers from politics, administration, planning, science, economics and urban society in Essen, and so to achieve widespread knowledge sharing. On 7th and 8th February 2022 at Essen exhibition centre, it will therefore be all about the subject of the cable car.

The city is the living space of the future, as various predictions indicate. However, the associated influx of people represents is a severe test for the existing infrastructure. Innovative concepts and changes will be needed, in order to make cities fit for the future. In particular, the subject of mobility must be tackled as soon as possible, as long tailbacks mean that the daily commute has become a test of endurance.

Various systems will be needed, in order to meet all the challenges that arise. In some South American and Asian cities, the cable car forms a part of this transport mix. Specialist trade fair CABLE CAR WORLD now hopes also to raise awareness of the efficient and sustainable system in Europe.

“People are familiar with the cable car system but it is so strongly associated with mountains and Alpine sport that many people find a cable car hard to imagine in the urban sphere. There is a lack of detailed information and even of a list of best practice examples, such as Moscow, Berlin, Koblenz and Paris, in order to convince decisionmakers and the population of the opportunities with a cable car in an urban area,” CABLE CAR WORLD initiator Dominik Berndt reports.

This opinion is shared by political figures as well as numerous decision-makers and industry representatives. The German federal ministry of transport and digital infrastructure has therefore even decided to sponsor the two-day specialist trade fair.

Cable Car World

For the first time, CABLE CAR WORLD offers an exclusive forum for the urban cable car as a mode of transport. The two-day trade fair with an integrated specialists’ convention is planned for 8th – 9th February 2022 as a face-to-face event and will be sponsored by the German federal ministry of transport and digital infrastructure. The venue is Essen exhibition centre in the centre of the Ruhr metropolis, Germany’s largest urban conurbation. The starting point will be the many deliberations in Germany concerning the future use of urban cable cars for public transport.

In addition, companies such as international steel group ARCELORMITTAL, planning office DREES & SOMMER, and the world’s biggest cable car manufacturers – DOPPELMAYR, BARTHOLET and LEITNER – have already declared their support for the specialist trade fair.

Mobility mix

For the people responsible at CABLE CAR WORLD, it is important to address the opportunities and possibilities of an urban cable car as well as the concerns of the population.

“The cable car does not represent a stand-alone solution to city mobility problems; it is a partial solution, which can resolve the connection issue of the last mile. Together with trams, buses etc., it can significantly strengthen the mobility network. At CABLE CAR WORLD, we want to paint a realistic picture of the urban cable car,” says CABLE CAR WORLD initiator Gerald Pichlmair. It is hoped that this authentic image can be achieved through a combination of specialist presentations and personal conversations.

“We want to link up stakeholders working in the area of urban mobility. CABLE CAR WORLD should be a platform for joint exchange,” Pichlmair says. In recent months, everyone has experienced the importance of personal interaction. As the cable car in the urban sphere is still an under-represented system in Europe, it is important to facilitate networking and the provision of the necessary information.

This is where the specialist trade fair aims to begin, bringing together decision-makers, planners, industry and population, to collaborate on the generation of new projects and to bring these to fruition. To this end, even the biggest cable car manufacturers in Europe will gather around one table. Together, at the specialist trade fair in Essen, they want to present the cable car system. In the so-called mobility lab., the centrepiece of CABLE CAR WORLD, the plan is to present key areas on four theme islands in a way that everyone can understand.

“Many cable car projects fail at an early stage, because there is a lack of acceptance of the system. CABLE CAR WORLD can help here, as anyone will be able to look at the subject of the urban cable car without having a specific project in mind. This will allow the general public to become familiar with the pros and cons of the transport system and therefore make it easier to win trust,” Berndt explains the idea of the specialist trade fair.

Mobility Lab

To continue to satisfy the mobility needs of the population in the future, innovative mobility solutions are required. The creative minds from science often do well here, taking a completely new approach to the subject of mobility. As this aspect in particular is a key element in the way ahead for mobility in the future, there will also be space for research and development at the specialist trade fair. In the mobility lab. there will be space for studies and innovative solution concepts that rethink established transport systems.
