LEITNER ROPEWAYS CONTINUES EXPANSION OF THE URBAN CABLE CAR SYSTEM
Alongside the goal of significantly improving the efficiency of the local transport in the district of Iztapalapa should the cable car also ensure improved safety. Ultimately, with its around 1.8 million residents, the neighbourhood is characterised by a high crime rate and severe poverty. The local topographical conditions also favour the construction of a cable car.
Now, two interconnected cable cars should therefore ensure that the population of Iztapalapa has safer and quicker access to the existing public transport network in the future.
Cablebús 2 project
Equipped with 305 10-person gondolas, the new “Cablebús 2” cable car system will transport 50,000 people per day over a total distance of 10.6 kilometres, via seven stations. The two termini will be connected respectively to metro line 8 at “Constitución de 1917” station and to metro line A at “Santa Martha” station. Passengers will therefore have fast and safe access to the metro network.
The new line will contribute to relieving private transport and moreover offer a time-saving alternative to transport by road: rather than 73 minutes by public or private transport on the road, the journey time by gondola railway will now be only 36 minutes.

Full speed ahead on construction work
The work, which began at the start of 2020, should be completed by spring 2021. Three out of seven stations and a third of the supports have already been installed. LEITNER ropeways is constructing the cable car together with Mexican joint venture partner Alfa Proveedores y Contratistas S.A. de C.V.
Cable car as a social project
According to the mayor of the Mexican capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, the new cable car should contribute to the positive development of the neighbourhood in two ways: “Cablebús is not only an important mobility project but also a social project. It creates fast, affordable mobility for people who live in a part of the city that is not so well served.”

Three further lines already in planning
In the district of Ecatepec de Morelos, in the north of the metropolis that millions of people call home, LEITNER ropeways will also build three more interconnected cable cars by the end of 2021.
The new age of mobility began here back in 2016 with the opening of the first urban cable car in the country of Mexico, in the form of two interconnected cable cars from LEITNER ropeways, between Via Morelos and San Andrés De La Cañada.
