Mumbai: urban cable cars to ease traffic and cut pollution
The proposed cable car project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), India, has received in-principle approval from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. This was announced by Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik.
According to the portal Urban Acres, it was provided during a meeting of state transport ministers in New Delhi. Gadkari instructed the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to conduct a survey and prepare a Detailed Project Report to advance the project, which aims to address the growing challenges of urbanization and transportation in the region.
Transportation Challenges in Mumbai
Urbanization in the MMR has been growing quickly, leading to more vehicles on the road, poor road and rail services, and higher pollution levels. The region is known for its dense population, with roadways often gridlocked and trains overcrowded. To address these challenges, Sarnaik stressed the importance of making strategic decisions and exploring creative solutions that have proven effective globally.
Traffic jams and air pollution in Mumbai are a big problem.
The cable car could be an effective solution for both locals and tourists.

Cable cars as a solution for locals and tourists
As Maharashtra Transport Minister pointed out, cable car projects could offer a much-needed alternative to the current modes of transportation. This decision comes in response to Mumbai’s unique geographical challenges and opportunities.
The city and its surroundings are home to popular tourist destinations such as the Elephanta Caves, Matheran Hill Station, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sarnaik pointed out that cable car systems could connect these locations efficiently, providing tourists with a convenient and scenic way to explore the region while reducing traffic congestion.
Project Funding
As reported by the portal The Free Press Journal, the project will either be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model or as a joint venture in collaboration with the central and state governments.
