Yokohama cable car – opening as early as the end of April
Japan is at the top of the list of dream destinations for many tourists. Among other things, this is due to its diverse culture and fascinating architecture. Moreover, a modern and highly efficient public transport system makes it easy to get around in the cities.
Nevertheless, in Japan’s second city, potential was found for improvement. After careful consideration, an urban cable car was chosen, which should go into operation as early as on 22nd April 2021. The Yokohama Air Cabin forms a direct link between Sakuragicho Station and Shinko Pier and it therefore facilitates access between the two locations. Moreover, the new connection is the country’s first permanent urban cable car.
Sakuragicho Station is one of the transport points in the centre of Yokohama. Shinko Pier is an area with city amusement park Yokohama Cosmo World and its Ferris wheel as well as the Yokohama World Porters shopping centre and the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse business complex. The route is therefore heavily used and will benefit from the high-performance transport system. Each gondola will have space for eight people and a total of 36 of these vehicles have been purchased.
The journey in the air-conditioned cable car will take around five minutes.
An urban cable car was considered back in 2014. At that time, the aim was to construct a transport system for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan.
