Urban cable car for Genoa
An urban cable car is intended to enhance the attractiveness of the city of Genoa for tourists while also serving as part of the public transportation network. The route will commence in Principe and terminate at the Begato fortress.
Up to 800 persons per hour could be transported from the sea to the mountain via the cable car. Each cabin is authorized to carry 60 persons per trip. The route spans approx. 2.5 kilometers, deviating from the previously planned path to bypass the Lagaccio residential area.
For the initial section, two supports are proposed, one at the level of the local health authority and the other on the grounds of the former Gavoglio barracks. In total, the cable car will have four supports, different from the originally planned twelve supports.
Three stations
A midway station on the proposed route with three stations will be integrated into the public transportation network. The journey is expected to take approximately ten minutes. In planning the cable car, particular attention is being paid to minimizing its impact on residents.
The citizens of Genoa will be able to use the cable car with a regular ticket for local transit.
Environmental impact assessment
The project was initially slated for completion in the summer of 2023. However, due to social and environmental concerns, the planned route of the cable car is currently under review to assess its impact on the environment and safety of the population, as the cable car passes over inhabited areas.
Simone Tomelleri, Commercial Director of DOPPELMAYR Italia, presented the project at the Shipping, Transportation & Intermodal Forum. The project is budgeted with 33.8 million euros.
