A cable car for Tenerife
The public company “Gesplan” has prepared a politically commissioned report on what a cable car in Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, could look like, according to the online portal Tenerife News.
Carlos Tarife, City Councillor for Public Services and Strategic Planning, sees this as an extremely important step. He believes it now enables the city administration to push the project forward, even against skeptics of the multi-million euro plan, which is to be presented to the EU among others.
“The next step will be the drafting of the basic project,” said Tarife.
To finance the project, the city is seeking cooperation with the Tenerife administration and the company Teleférico del Teide, which already operates a cable car on the “roof of the island.”
Experience with cable cars
With the aerial tramway on Mount Teide, Tenerife already has experience with cable cars.
Construction Costs
Tarife explained that they will try to obtain European funding, but the project can also be managed without it. The total cost of the cable car is as follows:
- 1.3 million euros for construction work
- 15.5 million euros for electromechanical work
- 135,000 euros for electrical work
- 60,000 euros for public services
- 20,000 euros for sewer work
- 34,000 euros for ticket sales
The preparation of the basic project by Gesplan will also cost 268,000 euros and is expected to be completed within twelve months. The public tender for the construction work is scheduled for 2025.
Cable car over the city?
A preliminary study has already given the green light.
Initial Key Data
A preliminary study identified a cable car connection between Los Lavaderos and the forest on the outskirts of the Parque de Las Mesas as the best option. In the first phase, 30 cabins are planned, each accommodating eight passengers. If there is a significant and sustained demand, the number of cabins can be increased to 41.
The cable car in Tenerife’s capital is intended to operate 360 days a year. The operating hours are planned to be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on public holidays. It will be closed for major maintenance work for five days a year. The environmental impact of the project has been assessed as minimal.
